Chaves belongs to the Alto Tâmega Region. The Alto Tâmega Region is located in the Vila Real district, in Trás-os-Montes, Portugal, bordering on the north with the Spanish region of Galicia, Spain, on the south with the grouping of municipalities in the North Douro Valley, East, with Terra Fria and Terra Quente Transmontana and to the West, with municipalities in the Vale do Lima, Alto Cavado and Alto Ave groupings. Corresponds to the territory covered by the Municipalities of Boticas, Chaves, Montalegre, Ribeira de Pena, Valpaços and Vila Pouca Aguiar.



Alto Tâmega is characterized by being a region with excellent road axes (A24, A7 and direct connection to A4). It also has a direct connection from the A24 to the highway and the A75 in Galicia, which in turn connects with the A52 (Autovia das Rias Baixas).

Road connections via motorways also allow direct connection to other relevant transport infrastructures in Northern Portugal (Porto de Leixões and Sá Carneiro Airport) and Galicia (Porto de Vigo, Vigo Airport and Santiago de Compostela), within a radius 200 km away.
